Just came across this little gem! Oh, and the term Subvertising as an alternative to culture jamming. I think it has a nice ring to it....subvertising.
Anyways...to the ad.
When I first saw this it immediately reminded me of the "Killing Us Softly" film by Jean Kilbourne, in which she implores us to "'take advertising seriously". The way that women, minority groups and other marginalized people are portrayed is really quite unbelievable once you begin to actually listen and take in what you are seeing. I think that this culture jam is perfect not only because it is straight forward and in your face...but also because "sexism" can be replaced with any number of words including: racism, ageism, homophobia, etc. etc. etc :|| PERFECT!

I love this picture!

I would have liked to have seen these words written on a specific advertisement. Say, for example if there was an add for some perfume or clothing line with a picture some half naked woman on it... then I think these words would have even more significance. Either way, I think this is pretty awesome!

I absolutely love, love this picture! it's definitely doing its share of 'getting the message out there'. It's plain, to the point and LOUD!
ReplyDelete- as well in the film, Killing Us Softly, Jean Kilbourne says that ads (back in the day and now) send out the message of who we are and what we SHOULD be. and then those kind of particular messages get embedded in us, literally! which is when we start thinking that to make these big red letters more significant... there needs to be a half naked woman.... possibly to think about??

It's interesting that 'we' know sexism sells, and yet it can sometimes be difficult to see sexism at work in advertising. This connects to Hall's "politics of representation" quite nicely.
