Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!)

These two culture jammers have one main goal in mind with their public projects: to accurately include lesbians, and lesbian lifestyles in American pop culture. Comprised of two artists, these culture jammers use their own artwork to bring to light lesbian and queer issues through poster campaigns, in publicly recognizable spaces. WHY?? ...If queers are not going to be accurately depicted in media, than why not take the queer image into our own hands and show the rest of the public what it is really like?

ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post I checked out the DAM website and I think that this group is not only brilliant but also SO hilarious! I love their cultural jams they are so witty and expressive :). I especially love their page; Dyke Action Machine INCORPORATED (2008) their guide to "selling out" LOL so funny! This is fantastic! I really like how it not only discusses gay marriage, but how it also attacks the stereotypical image of the woman in the home; it is set in the kitchen, everything is shiny and clean, and yet there's an unexpected queer twist to it. Great find!

ReplyDeleteI am glad you liked it. I also enjoyed their whole website. I think that their work is doing a great job at showing how even sub-cultures within our society(ie Queer) have their own pop culture issues and normative aspects which can be challenged. The picture that I chose from DAM!'s work, is a good representation of Queer counter culture. A good way to push away from the heteronormative institution that is marriage.
